Improve mental clarity and get rid of brain fog with this simple tea made with brain-stimulating herbs. It's delicious, easy to make and your brain will thank you!
For me, herbs and botanicals have become an essential part of life. A day feels incomplete if not at least 1-4 cups of herbal tea are slowly steeped and consumed. Among them are my relaxing lavender tea with lemon and my calming sweet dreams herbal sleep tea and this brand new one I'm sharing today!
Tea for me is a ritual, an indulgence, but also a necessity as my jars of herbs, neatly stacked in my kitchen call to me daily. In my opinion, herbs truly hold the answer to many of our ailments if only we know how to properly combine and use them.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still a fan of already blended teas that come in neat little tea bags, but the pure pleasure of playing Alchemist with loose herbs gives me a degree of freedom. Inspired by my all-time favorite herbalist Rachelle Robinett (whose Substack, I HIGHLY recommend), I created this tea to improve brain circulation, help improve mental clarity, and combat brain fog while also delivering a degree of calm and focus. All the while keeping it caffeine-free.
In this tea, you'll find a blend of nootropic herbs, nervines, as well as carminatives. The herbs are envigorating but not stimulating (hence the caffeine-free part) and the main purpose of it is to be able to clear brain fog and help sharpen the mind. And of course, all the herbs are also anti-inflammatory and much more, as you'll see below.
It's a refreshing tea, ideal for that afternoon slump or anytime you need a little extra mental boost.
What Are The Symptoms Of Brain Fog?
If you've ever experienced brain fog, you probably already know what it is without knowing the name. It truly feels like it sounds. But the more descriptive symptoms are:
- Fuzzy or jumbled thoughts
- Inability to concentrate
- Feeling mentally drained
- Unable to come up with words
- Easily distracted
- Forgetful and frazzled
I think most of us are very familiar with these feelings as they're downright awful.
Why This Tea Helps To Reduce Brain Fog
The individual benefits of the herbs described below are indisputable, yet together they offer powerful benefits in a fragrant, delicious, and invigorating tea that's caffeine-free and perfect for any time of day.
What Herbs Do You Need For This Brain Fog Tea?
Lavender
Lavender has been classically used for headaches, anxiety, and depression, and increases the brain's release of dopamine and serotonin. Components in lavender interact with the nervous system in a calming yet not sedating way, yielding focused relaxation.
Peppermint
More than just soothing an upset stomach, peppermint is an invigorating herb that increases alertness while helping with memory function as well as relaxation. The scent and taste of peppermint are helpful when you're feeling sluggish and tired.
Sage
Sage is not commonly used in tea blends but I absolutely love the flavor of it and unlike in food, where it can be overpowering, in tea it works really well. Studies show that sage improves memory and brain function along with cognitive skills and delays cognitive decline.
Rosemary
Like the prior herbs mentioned, the benefits of rosemary include, improving memory function and alertness, anxiety relief, and calm, focused attention. Rosemary is also known to reduce cortisol levels, therefore reducing stress levels.
Holy Basil
Holy basil is an herb in the nootropic category and is exceptionally good for brain fog treatment. Nootropics are herbs and substances that improve brain and cognitive function. Holy basil is an absolute must herb in this brain fog tea as it improves cloudy thinking, poor memory, cognition, and much more.
Gotu Kola
Gotu kola is a fascinating herb as it supports cognitive health and has been used for thousands of years in Asian countries. In fact, its Chinese name is "fountain of youth". The benefits of gotu kola include it acting as a neuroprotective and offering mental health benefits that include improving circulation in the brain, which removes toxins and waste and brings fresh nutrients where they're needed most.
Let's Make It
Step 1. Combine all the herbs in a tea carafe or the infuser of your choice.
Step 2. Pour hot water over them and steep for 5-10 minutes. You can do it longer if you want a more infused tea.
Step 3. Enjoy it on its own or with honey and lemon.
No, this tea is 100% caffeine-free. None of the herbs used are stimulating the way caffeine is.
I find it best to make and drink this tea in the afternoon, or if you need a dose of mental clarity, mid-morning.
I've included links below to all the teas. If you're an avid tea drinker, I recommend starting your own collection of herbs, you can mix and match. You can also use your favorite local herb shop or online herb store.
As is the case with all herbs, it's best to use caution if you're pregnant or nursing. But if you are not, there are no known cautions at the amounts recommended for this tea.

Robbyn Ellender
I would like to know this, can I just buy a ready to use tea? If so, what brand can I use please? I cannot afford to buy all the ingredients in order to make this myself.

Hi Robbyn, unfortunately I don't know of a brand that would incorporate these herbs in this specific variation. Some health food stores sell loose herbs and you can just grab a little of each. If that's not a possibility, even if you have lavender, rosemary and peppermint, that would be a good start!
