It is no secret that I have a bit of an infatuation with moon milk. The combination of warm (plant) milk and spices has a magical effect on the body and nervous system. No wonder moon milk has been a beloved Ayurvedic drink for a very long time.
While I've played around with various combinations over the years, and suspect I probably will continue to do so, this time I decided to incorporate some traditional winter holiday flavors into my beloved drink and coin it gingerbread moon milk. You'll find flavors of ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg combined with calming ashwagandha, almond milk, coconut oil, and maple syrup to create a healthy nighttime drink that's perfect right before sleep or anytime you need a little unwinding.
Why You'll Love This Gingerbread Moon Milk
- It's vegan, gluten-free and soy-free
- It is refined sugar-free
- Makes a healthy drink to have before bed or when you need a little calming
- Is anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant rich
- You can make it keto or low-carb too
Ingredients For Your Shopping List
Almond milk - If you prefer different plant-based milk such as oat, cashew, or coconut, those can work as well but I find almond milk to work best. I use vanilla-flavored unsweetened almond milk by Almond Breeze (no affiliation, just my favorite).
Ashwagandha - I use pure ashwagandha in powder form which is versatile and can easily be added to drinks and smoothies. It's also much more cost-effective than capsules.
Ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and nutmeg - These anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory herbs combine to make the perfect gingerbread flavor. All of them are available in your local grocery store.
Coconut oil - Unrefined coconut oil is particularly soothing before sleep and gives the moon milk a nice creamy texture.
Vanilla extract - Even though I use vanilla-flavored almond milk, I like adding just a little bit extra for additional flavor.
Maple syrup - The maple syrup ties all the flavors together by adding just a hint of sweetness. If you're following a keto or low-carb diet, you can use keto maple syrup or keto honey or omit sweetener altogether.
How To Make It
Step 1. Warm almond milk in a small pot and add all the remaining ingredients.
Step 2. Add everything to a blender and blend for 10-15 seconds until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Pour into a mug and serve right away.
Step 3. Optional: If you have a frother, you can add ½ cup of milk to it and top the moon milk with frothy milk. Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
FAQs And Top Tips
Do You Need A Blender To Make Moon Milk?
I prefer using a blender as it helps to incorporate all the ingredients and create a natural froth from the coconut oil. That's a little harder to achieve by whisking it by hand but nonetheless, if you don't have a blender, just mix all the ingredients well.
Why Is It Called Gingerbread Moon Milk?
I named it gingerbread because it used the primary spices you'll find in gingerbread and added cardamom because I personally love it and because it's so wonderful for our bodies.
ass="wp-block-heading">Why Is Moon Milk Good For Sleep?
Ashwagandha and cardamom are both very good natural calming for anxiety and insomnia. Ashwagandha in particular has been heavily studied and shown to help with improving sleep and reducing anxiety. What is not to love?
Does Moon Milk Help With Inflammation?
All the spices in moon milk are antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory, making this an excellent drink to have every single day to help reduce inflammation and stress.
Can You Skip The Cardamom?
If you're not a spice junky like me and don't have cardamom handy, you can make it without but I hope you get the chance to try it with cardamom as it adds a rich, beautiful flavor.
